Durian banners!
on August 11th, 2009, by Ton
David Revoy made a cool series of banners, for everyone who likes to help us promoting the campaign. Add it to your websites!
Further short news snippets:
- We presented Blender 2.5 and the Durian project prominently at Siggraph (see picture). I brought about 250 BBB dvds as give-aways which caused quite some amazement… giving away free stuff? Yeah, but then just buy the durian dvd now!
- Several companies at Siggraph expressed interest to support Durian, especially to support us making it stereo/3d. All of this is tentative still, doing follow-ups now.
- I’m also invited as a speaker on IBC – http://www.ibc.org – the leading international conference and gigantic tradeshow for the digital media industry. Will be great networking opportunity!
- Colin is currently working with Martin Lodewijk about first script treatments, things are looking very promising. Will need to kick Martin a bit to speed-up so we can get to work on breakdown and storyboards in september.
- In less than two weeks, all the Durian artists (+ Brecht & me) will come over to Amsterdam for the pre-production week! Is going to be exciting, expect fun stories and pictures here all week.
- More gold sponsors in! Check sponsor page… we’re also very proud of the presale campaign sofar, goes great!

I have a advice:
I think that the story should reflect the Blender story and its evolution.
Personally i didn’t like the bloody banner which shocks instead of inspiring.
And that’s is the point, INSPIRATION! Blender its developers and its community are an example of self-improvement, evolving and passion, there is not something like “suffering” here, i never feel a knife in my hand using Blender, instead i feel my hand more free than other times using other packages, and thats is inspirational, at least fo me.
So my recommendation is that the story sends and reflects the message that Blender and all supporting it are already sending!
Cheers! Agustin.

August 12th, 2009 at 12:38
Hey guys,
Any chance of some similar large size banners without the stabbed hand? Looking at it just makes me go “Ouch!” rather than “Kick a$$! YEAH!” :$ I’d love to promote durian on my blog, though!
August 12th, 2009 at 18:30
A stereoscopic 3D version would be awesome! Imagine, first open source movie in stereo…
August 12th, 2009 at 18:54
Yep! my blog has it on now! blog.dustyghost .com
Happy to do so!
August 12th, 2009 at 18:55

Sorry I meant the banners of course.
August 12th, 2009 at 19:00
Sorry I don’t know why, but sometimes when I post a comment I don’t see it, so I ended up posting twice.
August 13th, 2009 at 04:36
I think that scene looks nice. Black ritual? Torture for information? In any case, I hope it will be in the movie.
August 13th, 2009 at 14:33
Dusty: the spam filter on this blog is quite evil… it seems to block everyone’s first post or so. Currently it goes fine I think, if you have this again notify me!
August 13th, 2009 at 18:35
@Ton: Sometimes when I want to leave a comment, I am surprised that the fields are already filled with someone else’s name, email and website. This happened to me more than once.
August 14th, 2009 at 05:42
I’ll post one of these banners on my blog as soon as I figure out how! This is so exciting, I actually just pre-ordered my copy

Why you guys have used Photoshop to make the mountain image ?
I thought you guys only use Open Source tools

@Dark Star
Hey dark, don’t forget that the people working on this project come from all over the place and will already have tools they like to use before they started.
If they have a licensed copy of Photoshop already, then why not use it for promotional material?
Though I admit the challenge is to create a movie using open source, so as long as the frames of the movie are completely OS, then I see the challenge as met…. so…..

@Dark Star -
Valid question. Truth is that most of the image was actually done in the Gimp. I think at least the entire backdrop section. However, my computer was having a multitude of issues at the time and Photoshop is what I am still a bit more familiar with so I just finished it up in Photoshop for time reasons. Gimp is now the only image editing (well, except mspaint) on my machine and I’m trying to keep it that way to learn it faster.
August 18th, 2009 at 03:50
Thanks :for clarifying, no problem with that
Keep up the good work .. Even though I am a hardcore Gimp fan and user I cannot get that effect in Gimp
Waiting for more spoilers and hoping I’ll learn blender soon
Keep up the good work guys. Heres hoping best of luck for the project

Great looking site! Maybe you should use ads from Prosperent network. They pay based on sales not a clicks!!! That means way better money than adsense or any PPC:) If you are interested send me an email. I will send you invitation code. Cheers.

I think that any company that takes their online presence seriously should look into having a blog. It is a way to engage with your customers on a more personal level.

You you could change the blog subject title Sintel, the Durian Open Movie Project » Blog Archive » Durian banners! to more specific for your subject you make. I liked the post nevertheless.
