Shaman Model, 1st Stage
on December 14th, 2009, by angelaShaman’s 1st modeling stage is completed. Here are some quick screen captured images…
Note: Geometry pieces of hair/beard/brows are temporary and meant to outline shape. They will be replaced with hair particles.
Next stage will involve topology refinement to face & robe, adding remaining clothing details, adding inside mouth. Then lastly, sculpting final details/surface will follow.

Great model, Angela!
December 14th, 2009 at 21:40
I do like da mesh!
December 14th, 2009 at 21:50
Topology looks clean already….did you plan on reducing the count…I really don’t see many if any problems with this…other than from animation around the elbow area…maybe another loop or two….
Great Stuff.
December 14th, 2009 at 21:57
That’s just sexy with the modelling. I aspire to be as fluent in modelling as this lady right here! Good work Angela!

Killing us softly…
December 14th, 2009 at 22:14
Great model, although the man looks a bit strange with his scarf around the head, as if one of his grandchildren had played him a trick and disguised him during his sleep. Maybe some kind of cap would look better ? But I am sure texture will make all these clothings look well worn and old and tattered.
Thank you again for sharing with us all these works in progress !
December 14th, 2009 at 22:22
Hey Angela, excelent model!
. That’s really helpfull for all of us!
thanks for show us the topology
By the way, you going to use meshes to simulate hair?
December 14th, 2009 at 22:24
oops, i have to read before post :S
December 14th, 2009 at 22:26
His nose and ears are indeed huge; he looks somewhat… cuter than his painting.
The scary hands have so much character! And the mesh is just killing me.
December 14th, 2009 at 22:28
Like living.
December 14th, 2009 at 22:32
Bon boulot, très bon boulot
December 14th, 2009 at 22:33
Very cool topology! Great work!
December 14th, 2009 at 22:33
Simply inspiring.
thanks for sharing.:)
December 14th, 2009 at 22:55
Great
I already love that character now
Too bad his four arms are gone xD But oh well, this is nice too
December 14th, 2009 at 23:08
Hey! That guy have my nails!
…
…
Maybe it’s time for me to cut them…
December 14th, 2009 at 23:31
Yeah Angela, you rulez!!!!:) \o/
December 14th, 2009 at 23:35
Hey angela,
In my untrained eye the topology already looks quite neat, looking forward to see how it can be improved ^^ Although it’s still a bit early for this kind of thing, do you think there will be a (small) explanation of topology on 1 of the durian dvds?
I personally find the head slightly too roundish, the original drawing that was posted on the blog looked more sharpish and more scaled over the z-axis, which I preferred. But still I really like the topnotch stuff you and the rest of the team are producing
December 15th, 2009 at 00:03
Realy awesome work !
He remains me of Gandy’d head and Raspoutine’s hands ! Hehe
keep it up ! =D
December 15th, 2009 at 00:06
Aghh, long scary fingernails!
December 15th, 2009 at 00:37
he looks so weird with out the hair, and when you do add that in, it gives him a lot of character
December 15th, 2009 at 00:41
Without the beard, scarf, etc, he just looks to cute, young and innocent. However with the bear he looks right. Can’t wait for this magnificent job to be textured.
December 15th, 2009 at 00:42
Angela! You are the best!
December 15th, 2009 at 01:09
IMO he looks too much friendly and kindly. I`d say he`s a retired pirate
I`d like to see some scares on his face.
December 15th, 2009 at 01:10
Looks great.
But i think its look like an alchemist.
December 15th, 2009 at 01:24
IMHO the hair makes this character look too cliche! The character has a very interesting face – why hide it?
December 15th, 2009 at 01:28
Wow! it’s going to be some adventure! great work!
December 15th, 2009 at 01:31
haha He looks like a pirate with the bandana
December 15th, 2009 at 02:05
nice work, a very solid start indeed.
Are you planning do do the whole displacement sculpt or normal maps, this is going to look wicked with details!
too bad you couldn’t get this guy in http://durian.blender.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/shaman.jpeg
December 15th, 2009 at 02:22
Alright. Now just add two extra arms and get rid of the beard and silly hat and there we have the nice shaman again…
December 15th, 2009 at 02:34
Pretty neat, although I do have a few critiques. The nose looks a little bit on the fat side, and most of the head is a little bit wider than looks natural. I agree that the face looks quite interesting without the hair, but don’t really see any reason to get rid of the hair either.
One thing I would like to see is a mesh version of the hair for the final character. Of course in most/all of the film’s actual shots, you’d want to use particles, but fully rigged human models would be a boon to lots of free software projects beyond Durian. By the way, how many polygons are in this mesh?
December 15th, 2009 at 03:59
What a clean and detailed model. It looks like it’ll be a breeze to rig and animate, even without the retop. The Durian team really is lucky to have you!
December 15th, 2009 at 04:05
cool!
the topology is already cool
December 15th, 2009 at 04:46
Oops, I was so in awe of the mesh. I forgot my question.
The mesh around the Shaman’s face appears to be quite dense. You said before that you use proportional edit mode for modelling detailed areas like this. Just wondering do you use a mouse or a tablet for this sort of modelling?
December 15th, 2009 at 04:49
I can’t wait to see your tutorial in the DVD. Great work, congratulations!
December 15th, 2009 at 05:00
Thats very a very nice model. Can’t wait till I can start producing stuff of close or the same quality. I’m struggling with bouncing back between Maya PLE and Blender but my heart says Blender..
December 15th, 2009 at 06:55
You always amaze and surprise us with your fine details, Angela. Keep it up! ^_^

Nice work Angela. I would like to see the images when proper hairs have been added. Great work!
December 15th, 2009 at 09:01
damn nice work that topology looks neat, though the skin below his arm looks overdone he looks he got a bit of wing at the moment.
@kram1032 and Max; I take it neither of you has seen Spirited Away, if this guy has four arms than you are going to hear a lot of people say how he is a rip off of Kamajii from Spirited Away and I will be one of them. Kamajii also plays a similar role in that movie. The wise man role that is familar in all hero narratives.

Hi !
The piercings are generally located above the nostril in sillion and then under the spetum. For as it is placed here, if the guy mouse it will hurt him if something crosses the septum…sorry for my bad english. J’es^^ère que c’est clair !?

December 15th, 2009 at 12:17
He looks like an old biker.
Someone should model him a motor bike!
December 15th, 2009 at 12:53
Thanks for everyone’s comments!
As mentioned in my previous blog post, aside from proportions being locked for rig joint placement, more improvements (cleanup, fine tuning, etc) will take place during the 2nd stage of modeling. http://durian.blender.org/news/modeling-dragons-production-schedule/
@ Month3d: yes, I plan on making a topology tutorial in the Durian DVD.
@ Chris: both sculpt and normal maps will be used
@ Rudiger: Currently I only use a mouse. For sculpting I will use a tablet.
@ otsoa: You’re absolutely right – that type of piercing would be especially painful
December 15th, 2009 at 13:20
Nice one Angela.
I especially like the hands. Really great work!
December 15th, 2009 at 14:52
Excellent work Angela !
December 15th, 2009 at 19:03
awesome, looking even more forward to my copy now
December 15th, 2009 at 19:22
hi,
if i can submit:
some good staff here but ! but too many “artifices” for me ! the piercings and all are too small OR too many ! (even if i like it, i wear some!) but i think for a shaman, the nature is at the center, so…some bones or shells or wood pieces will be better…
anyway, all the best for the next…

December 15th, 2009 at 19:55
pretty cool
the Mesh hair and stuff always looks good, even if it’s temporary
awesome
GO DURIAN!!! (is this getting old? i say it at the end of every comment…lol
)
December 16th, 2009 at 05:36
Wow, this is fantastic. Your mesh reminds me very much of the models/digital assets I have made for my current project.
Will you be releasing the final model at some point for public studying like the excellent models of Elephant’s Dream?
December 20th, 2009 at 06:12
I miss the old four armed shaman!
