Directorial Address – July 30th, 2010

on July 30th, 2010, by Colin Levy

Why hello! This past week has been a bit strange with a nearly empty studio. Nobody’s here to tell me how to feel!

In keeping with the tradition of dull and infrequent ‘directorial addresses’, here’s an update from headquarters.

Thanks for watching. :D Music by Jan Morgenstern.

    :D

  2. Revolt_Randy Says:

Will someone give Colin a tissue? (and maybe a comb)…..

  3. malefico Says:

Man, I almost bought it. I could see a couple empty bottles around.

  4. jirms Says:

Wow, think of all the new images of Colin’s face the blender community can come up with now!

  5. jirms Says:

Hey Colin, one more thing … I will be watching for your name on future projects, from the little bits of Sintel we have seen so far there is nothing to worry about.

  6. matt Says:

Nicely done – very bitter/sweet as one might expect at this point of a project that you and the rest of the team have been so emotionaly invested in (if you see what I mean). Can’t wait to get my DVDs so hopefully the guys around the world can find time to record and send in their tutorials etc :)

  7. Dusty Says:

    Awwwwwwww man! :)

  8. Siarhei Chekolian Says:

Colin! Crying scene was amazing! Are u sure, that u r studying correct subject in college? U should be an actor =) Keep up the good work!

  9. D Says:

    D`:
I’m getting choked up as well.

:D Also, there were some awesome sneak peaks in there for those who haven’t seen the movie! It looks like the alley lighting got fixed, and we finally get to see some fire!

The end is almost come, Colin. May you find your ultimate verdict in IMDB. :)

  10. PassPose Says:

I wonder what’s to his left… must be something really interesting, he keeps looking over there.

  11. Davis Says:

That fire looked AWESOME. The suspense is killing me dude.

  12. Twmffat Says:

September 20th! My birthday! What a present!

    But… I’ve seen it already @ StudioK :) It’s brill!

Colin, when he wasn’t hamming it up, asked for feedback – a bit that needs a tweak (IMVHO) was when Sintel strokes baby Scales – a shot that’s been released already. The hand moving over Scales looks a bit out to me. Just a thought :)

  13. SteamyShiner Says:

Wow, from I’ve seen it looks absolutely awesome. Can’t wait for the final film! Also, I’m not sure that slapping yourself in the face when crying is the best thing to do (just a thought… :p).

  14. Andre Says:

Wow! The music was freaking EPIC! Jan Morgenstern is amazing. How about a tutorial? lol. kidding. It’s pretty amazing, yes it’s all bitter sweet that that’s how you know you’ve done something right. Tutorials? Making a good one takes time, so don’t rush that. Maybe out source them to say Blenderguru or Blendercookie as a collaboration thing if time is short? Keep going Colin and the rest, you all are doing great!

  15. J. Says:

To be honest, this video makes me actually feeling the same!

    What a contrast, Colin!
On July 18th you were very happy, bright, clever etc, but now you’re almost alone, the ”boss” is having joy in LA…
I can imagine it’s strange for you, because you’re used to work with quite some people and now… empty… gone… sort of alone… no silly jokes from Nathan… no Pablo getting excited by looking at the bokeh on a poster… no Ton showing his ”advanced Blender Institute techology”…

Life’s hard, but luckily you can look forward to what’s coming…

Good luck, better times will come! :D

  16. Gryphon Says:

    (Waayyyy) off topic…
    0:27 — CHARMANDER!!

  17. wo262 Says:

    facepalm…. sad facepalm T_T

  18. chotio Says:

I lived all the durian production thanks to you and the others durian blog members, and I can say that the Durian team made me cry in some moments. Because the idea of a free movie is a great idea. We made all under the Colin´s leadership, and we made it, you made it. Tom made it again!!

Thanks a lot for your moments Colin and see you soon.

    Saludos
    adié

  19. Karthik Says:

Colin!…don’t make blender fans hardhearted man…
    almost watering eye…hah

  20. Alex Says:

    Funny and somehow sad :(
Looking forward to see great movie. I believe it would be GREAT!

  21. Piiichan Says:

    HAHA! So funny :D
    especially the last 5 seconds!

  22. jdcooke2010 Says:

    Love Mr. Morgenstern’s music

  23. K-Linux Says:

    Ah crap! You got me blubbering now! :{

  24. Commenter Says:

I can’t wait for the movie… Another month? Now I’m gonna cry, too!

  25. Big Fan Says:

It will be just fine I’m sure, Colin.
Blenderheads can be a technically critical lot but they will appreciate the hard work and dedication that went in to making it.
The team did the best they could. What more could you ask?
Looking forward to seeing it complete with last minute tweaks and extra shot ;)

  26. MeshWeaver Says:

wow…it’s been almost 11 months since I started following this project, and its almost over…I was actually feeling kinda sad when watching the video (that music didn’t help ;) lol) I’m serious. I’m definitely going to miss checking this place for updates, and videos of you all being nuts, and awesome animation and renders once the whole thing’s over…

anyway…you look kinda tired, Colin…or was that just acting for the video? ;)

p.s. btw, I noticed a Charmander figurine on a desk (kinda hard not to)…who’s is that? :P

shoot…i’m kinda stuck as to how to end this comment…oh well, i’ll stick with the original :

    GO DURIAN/SINTEL TEAM!

…EVEN IF THERE ARE ONLY 3 OF YOU STILL THERE! :D lol

  27. Blendiac Says:

So… when does pre-production of “Sintel 2: Scales’ Revenge™” get started?

Let the wild rumors BEGIN! :D

  28. Jayden Says:

    Let “Sintel 2:Scale’s Revenge”‘s production begin! Un-officially…..

  29. ben Says:

Colin! Sleep more! Or play Quake against Soenke or something. Ton’s not even there to whip you at the moment. Play PS3!

BTW – You feel tired but well accomplished.

  30. DudeFromKansas Says:

    @Gryphon
Glad I am not the only one who noticed. :p

I think that you all have done a great job and I am really looking forward to seeing the movie!! Man Colin you really no how to depress someone :p

  31. Jan Says:

Respect Colin! Not many directors get their hands dirty by doing the actual work!

  32. Jan Says:

Soenke is making crazy hours at the institute. I see a commit 1 o clock saturday morning and one at 9 o clock as well. Sleep is apparently optional for Soenke

  33. Bao2 Says:

Thanks Colin for all that human face references you give to the blender community.

  34. Rns Says:

    The music is very nice!

  35. JUANESTUPENDO Says:

For your fire… Rather than rendering it, why didn’t you just put Charmander in a dark room and record him doing his stuff and then put it over the clip with a multiply filter? D:

  36. Bernard Says:

Hey Colin! great demo reel as an actor!
If the community didn’t like the movie, at least you’re ready for the next one. Sort of a Tron 3 story style movie called ” Colin and the baby dragon” with you acting with the Durian Movie assets.
    Congrats Colin!

  37. J. Says:

@Colin: I’ve emailed you 2 weeks ago at colin(at)colinlevy.com. Did you read it? ;)

  38. J. Says:

Ooooh, I just saw you just mailed me, sorry! :P

  39. jbakker Says:

    Hi Colin,

I really like what you guys and Angela have done. it is really excellent and think that Sintel will be shown everywhere at Siggraph next year!

I think that in one of the last scenes it should be better to put Sintel more in the background and the background more in the front :) Hope you understand; I think that this is a way to make the scene more convincing without a lot of rework :)

    Regards, Jeroen

  40. Zazizizou Says:

I’m so very exited about the movie.. cant wait =/

  41. patrox Says:

I really looking forward to see Sintel, and especially the tutorials you are going to begin with. Will all tutorials be video-tutorials or are you making some text-tutorials as well?

  42. Pablo Vazquez Says:

    teardrop :’)
Colin, you’re awesome. Really looking forward to work with you again somewhere on the Blender network :D

BTW very emotional, Jan did a great job on the music, and your editing..!

  43. anonymous Says:

@Pablo: What did you use for the fire? the good smoke simulator or the bad particle effects?

  44. soenke Says:

Ben did the fire and he used volumetrics.

  45. anonymous Says:

@soenke: Nice, I wonder if Ben can shed some light on this.
@Ben: Can you? what do you think of the smoke simulator and volume renderer? have you managed to produce realistic results with them? Did you find anything bad/annoying?

  46. Jayden Says:

@anonymous: well, he has managed to produce realistic results with it, because that fire in the video looked AWESOME.
Well, have fun Colin. Haven fun. Can’t wait until it finshes.

  47. ben Says:

To keep it short, yes I found the fire simulation frustrating. Some of the issues have already been looked at by Genscher to some degree for future use to make it less frustrating.

    http://www.blendernation.com/introduction-to-smoke-simulation-in-blender-2-5/
    http://www.miikahweb.com/en/tutorials/blenderfire

What I did was basically mentioned here. Pushing the initial velocity really high was a large part of the effect, but that made it more unstable which was one of the main sources of frustration.

  48. Jayden Says:

@ben: thanks! I was looking into the smoke simulator!

  49. Lasse R. Bruntse Says:

    *sniff*

  50. TweakingKnobs Says:

The movie is great, i saw the pre premier, only crits i have , is feel there is some unconsistency in the shots.

some look more realistic than other, some look more sharp, crispy than others , but in general is Awesome !

    thanx !!!

  51. nathan Says:

    @Colin:
Hannah (my little bro’s wife) says you should get some sleep. I think she knows what she’s talking about. :-P

    *hugs!*

  52. J. Says:

This is the ultimate training for when he’s working on a $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ production. ;)
Colin is just desperate because he misses your hugs!

  53. john van der Zalm Says:

i am really keen to see this film. I believe this production is at the fore front of new era of film making. i’m sure this project will have a significate impact in the cg comuity for a long time to come.

congratulations everyone, can’t wait to see it when it comes available, also looking forward to seeing some more Blender Tech.

    john

  54. haven sole Says:

    Hey Colin,
You were very missed at Siggraph. This is James, I did the A/V support for Ton and the Blender BoF sessions there. Loved the pre-release version of Sintel. Only slight problems I had, and apparently some others, is one of the scenes you are/were already fixing. Congrats on the whole project. Your work with the group has really turned out a great product.
Endings to productions are always bittersweet but inevitably happen. I am sure that Sintel will help you in future endeavors and we will not be hearing the last of you. Jan did a great job with the projects sound and again with this video.
Congrats on a great project that I am sure will only get better with the final touches.

    james

  55. anton Says:

Very good work it is getting better and better
Unfortunately still no open source program and open source Vst used by Jan Morgenstern to make music?

  56. Colin Levy Says:

Thanks so much for the kind words, everyone! Very heartening to get this kind of support. :)

Hah, yeahh… I do have a lot of sleep to catch up on.

To everyone who’s offered criticism, here or through email, thank you so much! It’s great to hear what worked and didn’t work, what questions you have, and yeah– what shots bothered you from a technical standpoint.

Let’s see what I have time to fix!

Colin, I know you and last few guys there will do a great job finishing up! No worries! Sintel is already in the bag :) I can already hear the cheers of thousands of Youtube and Vimeo viewers.

  59. Sunjay Says:

    GREAT JOB!
    WE APPRECIATE YOU!

    :D

  60. Thristhan Says:

    Cool blog dude :)

  61. Vending Says:

    @Colin:

I hate goodbyes as much as the next guy, but just look forward to the next blender project :D

-my hope is that there’ll be a self sufficient studio system which regular members will make blender movies on their own with tasks restricted via a star system (ratings) given by the moderators (or you guys) and blender one day will have a film festival of it’s own.

(you know, with films and teams submitting stuff like blender’s summer of code and the selected ones get mentored by you pros :) -and whichever ones don’t get picked can still go, and if they finish they get entered into the festival. -it’d be great!)

It’s a great feeling when the app you’re working with is widespread and doesn’t give you the feeling that one day it’ll pull the plug :)

Hey I’ll drink to that (orange juice ;) ) -And if you can.. get some sleep if you haven’t already XD

  62. Vending Says:

ps.. my email address is fake.. blame the spam.

  63. maddes Says:

    Hi Colin,
    at 1:56 ff you said:
    “…we’ve even added a shot..”
    That’s great :)
maybe you manage to push the overal lenght to > 12 min (without credits)
    :D
for sure you push the quality too. Keep up your good work. your amazingly great.

  64. Roger Wickes Says:

    Parting is such sweet sorrow.

  65. ChaseA Says:

So proud of you Colin, I admire your hard work and your ability to put your whole heart into a project. Truly touching and inspirational, good luck with the final tweaks and hope to hear about your experiences this next year.
