New team members, 4k, renders
on March 24th, 2010, by TonYesterday we went to the 4k viewing room from Cinegrid Amsterdam again (www.waag.org). They were still fighting desktop issues, silly drivers stuff… the picture below was meant to be the first in a series showing us watch 4k, but then the camera battery went down! Still, it’s an insane screen with epic proportions and resolution. So cool to see our work on it!
Also arrived monday and tuesday, two new artists. They deserve a picture: William (2nd pic) and Dolf (3rd pic). Welcome dudes!
And for the impatient crowds; here a test render I snatched from Soenke today, it is really not final, bad textures, and so on. But still… worth showing! Later more…

– so cool!
March 24th, 2010 at 18:44
awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
March 24th, 2010 at 18:45
Aww, the baby dragon is fab, where can I get one? And welcome of course to William and Dolf!
March 24th, 2010 at 18:55
Cool test man.
i think you really need consider to change approach from bump to displacements… at least in the dragon. although not being final textures, the light interaction it´s not realistic and contours can be much better in displace mode..
i noted a strange thing in lips too…
anyway… all project is going very well artistically.. congratulations!
March 24th, 2010 at 19:05
Simply beautifull…
I was waiting for that post since saturday, hitting F5 to refresh the page, become desperate day after day, wondering myself “Damn they don’t work the week end or what ?”
Welcome to William and Dolf !!! Hope we’ll see some post from you here.
Ton, you should buy more batteries or bring a power cable with you next time !
Omg Dolf is already drinking coffee !
March 24th, 2010 at 19:11
A welcome to Willian and Dolf !!!…
…and a wow for the first 4K image…some hard work are needed yet…shadows, textures,DOF ( very adjusted to nose ), Scale ( compared to floor )…
Go ahead !!!
Sorry for my english
March 24th, 2010 at 20:01
Awesome!!! Welcome Willian and Dolf… hope you can bring a lot to the end result of the movie
March 24th, 2010 at 20:25
Cool stuff! What will the film ultimately be rendered on? I remember at the beginning of the project the prospect of building a small render farm was mentioned. Any news on that?
March 24th, 2010 at 20:26
how many gpus needed to get that image on there?
crazy stuff
March 24th, 2010 at 20:42
Yay
Impressive screen O.o
Great new artists in the team
I thought, the dragon would be red (as the small drawing on the left, linking to the blog), however as now, it looks nice too
Very cute
March 24th, 2010 at 20:44
sweet!!!!!!!!!!
March 24th, 2010 at 20:51
Beautiful!
I keep visiting here several times everyday too, so eager to see new stuffs.
Feel so excited about this epic project!
Keep it up!
March 24th, 2010 at 20:52
Welcome, guys! yay for 4k preview.
I could not help playing with the dragon in Gimp.
I basically tried to made it look more like this: http://durian.blender.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/sintel-wallpaper-dragon.jpg. I really love those colder and less saturated colours.
Cheers!
March 24th, 2010 at 21:46
If I ever get the chance to see Sintel in 4k i will be so happy! Looks like everyone is busy and producing extremely awesome things. Loving the dragon, even if it’s just a test render, I never would have guessed it’s not completely finish. Congrats Soenke
would like to wish the Durian team all the best!
March 24th, 2010 at 21:55
Wellcome you two!!!
And thumbs up for the dragon proggress
Still some work is needed and as you said is a test render yet… but it will be awesome!!
Good luck!!
March 24th, 2010 at 22:03
Welcome to the team fellas. May I say that the baby dragon is looking excellent!! I must agree with Luis that I wouldn’t have been able to tell it is not final!
March 24th, 2010 at 22:09
And how long does it take to render 1 frame in 4K??
March 24th, 2010 at 22:38
HOLY CRAP! That’s 4k?!
Congrats to William and Dolf. May you have a lot of fun!
March 24th, 2010 at 23:08
Just a thought:
Try rendering the eyes on a seperate layer, so you can make them really bright. Then bring them back in. Right now the eyes look dark and almost possesed. If you want, you could also just give them an “Emit” value.
Cheers!

I hope, that final pupil of the eye of dragon will be like reptiles have (not human one, like now).
March 24th, 2010 at 23:30
Nice work guys – You guys rock!
March 25th, 2010 at 00:09
Wow. Seems that Durian is employing 1/2 of Blenderartists users these days! Too bad I’m in the other half.
Anyway, congrats Dolf and Willian. You’re working on a fantastic project that I’m sure will make history. Enjoy yourselves!
For a test render, dragon is looking very sexy!
March 25th, 2010 at 01:47
Woooowwww, that 4K cap is just awesome…. lack of words!
Keep up the good work!
March 25th, 2010 at 01:52
And btw:
Let Dolf get rid of that smokes, just for his own good!
Or are you gonna say it’s an aid for animating smoke effects?
March 25th, 2010 at 03:16
I love the dragon but the teeth seem to be lacking texture also they seem to be to uniform no dents or anything but who cares. something about the eyes seem off I can’t pick it out yet but there is something missing it might just be the lighting.
March 25th, 2010 at 03:21
One more thing I noticed the left hand once you look at it and then look at the ground the hand look fake the shadow and title are not blurred like the dragon is, it looks like… a person having to much fun with filters in gimp.
March 25th, 2010 at 03:50
That’s not Windows XP, is it? Or maybe I’m confused about the openness of the open movie.
Epic dragon…and you say it’s unfinished. Wow. You folks are ridiculous, in the best way.
March 25th, 2010 at 04:01
Jake: That’s the Cinegrid 4k monitor. I doubt Cinegrid would let them install an entirely different OS on their computers.
March 25th, 2010 at 04:31
Welcome Dolf and Willian!!
The dragon is awesome!! Keep it up!!
March 25th, 2010 at 04:52
Bravo!!!
March 25th, 2010 at 08:13
I am at peace I was one of those begging for a dragon pic and here it is, that stare kinda of reminds me of puss n’ boots hypnotic stare from shrek 2. very nice pity I can’t see this is 4k when it comes out now that would rock.
March 25th, 2010 at 08:52
Awww, baby dragon! ^_^
Hello, William, Dolf!
Shadow isn’t right.
I wish I could see it in 4K.
March 25th, 2010 at 09:02
Welcome William and Dolf!
Might be time to update the about page
March 25th, 2010 at 10:30
Welcome William and Dolf…. this project is growing at a damned fast pace, wait a little more and you’ll have to expand the Institute to contain all the devs and artists!!!
Ohhh, baby Dragon!!!! So niceee! But what…. ?!?! the pupils of a dragon are reptile style, not human like!!!!
March 25th, 2010 at 10:32
Oh, just noticed soenke committed something 6 hours ago… guys, are you really working overnight too?!?
You need some sleep

@Lee ok, may be I am wrong

PLEASE GUYS, stop just praise, and make constructive criticism.(this is the problem of blender fanboys! Ton commented this in the past meetings, about too much enthusiastic boys, and lack of constructive criticism!)…
The rendering is far below what it should. the use of bumps really spoils a render in 4K.
all textures are poor, and need be refined. some composition passes need constructed, like the eyes pass. the shaders need be more sophisticated.( maps for SSS/specular/bump)
Just look at good “dragon” reference at this link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWVEQU-ikVU
Durian already is a very interesting project, but rendering need show the power of Blender 2.5. (and at the moment, it´s not showing this power).
March 26th, 2010 at 10:44
it’s great that it’s possible to hire more people for Durian!!
March 26th, 2010 at 17:44
kind of looked like Hiccup’s dragon there from How To Train Your Dragon:

March 26th, 2010 at 17:45
and i thought only Ubuntu OS is being used for the production.
March 26th, 2010 at 20:55
oh, a sort of moderation on comments? weird.

Good for a first render, but certainly not final quality.
The general bumpmapping is rather low quality, except on the top of the nose (or are that normalmaps or something the like?)
The teeth are, well, to be honest, utter failure xD Look like they’ve been pasted on the image afterwards.
DOF feels… off, can’t put my finger on it, but doesn’t look right.
There are others, but as this is just a first image, I think it’s shaping up nicely.
@Malcolm Zaloon
I do agree with you, just by saying how good a preview looks, doesn’t help the Durian team. They wanted to involve the community, but without constructive comments, it’s no use.
Well, anywho, keep up the good work.

Love Shrek movies, very good animation.

The Merriam Webster Online Dictionary defines the word purist as follows: one who adheres strictly and often excessively to a tradition. Purists seek the traditional form of a craft. Film styles such as black and white and claymation do have a place on the billboards today; however, it is debatable whether moviegoers understand the significance of these methods, or appreciate the tenacity it takes to put together a film of that calibre.

You can certainly see your skills within the paintings you write. The world hopes for more passionate writers like you who aren’t afraid to mention how they believe. All the time go after your heart.
